Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
